Free Concert
The folks at Kia were kind enough to put on a series of free shows to promote their new hip urban car, the “Soul”, requiring only an RSVP a few days before. I was pretty excited to get the confirmation email and to hear that the list was closed for the event.
We left work an hour early, but when we got there there was a line of at least 300 people lined up around two corners of a block. This was going to be an epic fail.
Half an hour went by standing in the cold and the line barely moved with the end of the line getting longer and longer. Then a bouncer came down the line and started telling everyone that the event had reached capacity. Everyone stood their ground but looked confused. When they came around again, people started to bail and leave the line.
Cut to two hours later and we had outlasted almost everyone to reach the front of the line, after being told repeatedly that there was no point lining up because the event was closed. One security person even started sweeping the street. We made a bunch of new drunk line friends, one with brown bag vodka and soda and one with wine in a Nalgene water bottle.
Then just as Crystal Castles went up on stage and the crowd inside went wild, they started to let some of us in, there were only 30 of us left. We laughed so hard, we’d outlasted the other 300 people and it had paid off.
When we got inside, all they had left of the free booze was white wine so we chugged a couple tumblers of that and weaved our way to the front of the stage. It was excellent!
